The winners joined FESPA and Awards sponsor HP at a VIP dinner event held at Amsterdam’s luxurious Okura Hotel on the evening before FESPA Digital 2009. At the dinner, winners received their prestigious Award certificates from members of the FESPA and HP teams. Winners had the opportunity to meet some of the Award jurors who were also present at the dinner.

The Exterior Category Winner, Stiefel Digitalprint GmbH, one of the leading large format printing service providers in Germany and Austria, also received the coveted Platinum Award, as the competition’s overall winner. Bernhard Stiefel, CEO, accepted the Platinum Winner’s trophy on behalf of his team from HP.

Images of the six winning projects can be seen on the dedicated FESPA Digital Print Awards 2009 stand at FESPA Digital 2009 in Amsterdam (Stand C160 in Hall 6 located between Halls 1 and 7). The winning entries were selected by an independent expert jury in March 2009, from over 200 entries submitted to the Awards web site at www.fespadpa.com. All entries can still be viewed in the online Gallery on this site.

FESPA CEO Nigel Steffens comments: “We are delighted with the number of entries that we received this year from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and the ongoing improvement in the calibre of entries. We see printers constantly pushing the creative limits with exciting and revolutionary results, making the task of choosing only one winner for each category a difficult one for our jury. We’re sure that the display of winning entries at the show will be an inspiration for our global community of printers, stimulating them to respond to their clients’ briefs in new and exciting ways.”

In addition to selecting the six Category Winners and the Platinum Winner, the jury also singled out a runner-up and a commended entry for each individual category. The runners-up are as follows:

Appendix A: Description of 2009 FESPA Digital Print Awards winning entries

Company Name

Project Name/description

Exterior

Stiefel Digitalprint GmbH

Bild Rhinefall:
Stiefel Digitalprint GmbH digitally printed a banner of Swiss artist Beat Toniolo’s artwork, depicting the unity of the European countries taking part in the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship. The substrate, flexible enough to float and navigate through the whitewater of the Rhinefall basin, is a rare wide-meshed material.

Fine Art

Tobex AB

Letting Go:
Tobex AB digitally printed a piece on a silk/viscose velvet material measuring 10 metres by 0.75 metres. The project was produced for textile designer client Liz Nilsson for an exhibition called “Pink Thursday” at Trelleborgs Museum, Sweden.

Interior

VCG Colourlink

Birmingham Post, Fort Dunlop:
The Birmingham Post and Mail Newspapers relocated to newly redeveloped Fort Dunlop, taking the entire sixth floor (53,582sq.ft.) of the iconic building. VCG Colourlink radically redesigned the open-plan office layout, creating artwork for the walls in a newsprint dot matrix pattern, using a combination of historical, contemporary and abstract images, which relate to the business.

Packaging & Manufactured Goods

Personal Media Solutions

MyChewingGum.com:
Personal Media Solutions developed a personalised, high quality packaging product for chewing gum to be sold all-year-round that appeals to all ages and genders.

Textile

Bonar Floors

Sottsass Collection:
Bonar Floors produced a range of original designs for client Sottsass Associati. The client expressed a specific interest in the unique and unusual surface of the nylon flock of Bonar Floors’ flocked flooring - a velvety, minimalist textile floor cladding with specific architectural qualities. Having never worked with the material, it created an interesting design challenge because Sottsass Associati were the first to exploit high definition digital printing techniques on flocked flooring.

Vehicle

Rutschi AG

Night Trains:
With ‘night’ as the main theme, Rutschi AG produced a dark, yet eye-catching and colourful graphic vehicle wrap for client ZVV Zürcher Verkehrsverbund. Changeable text was a key feature. The wrap was used before, during and after the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship on 26-metre wagons.
